What is PE Rattan and Why Does It Matter for Hotel Outdoor Spaces?
PE rattan — short for polyethylene rattan — is an engineered synthetic fibre woven over a metal frame to replicate the look of natural cane. Unlike natural rattan, which is a plant-based material that absorbs moisture, cracks under UV exposure, and requires seasonal storage, PE rattan is 100% synthetic, waterproof, and engineered for permanent outdoor use.
For HORECA procurement managers, this distinction matters significantly. Natural rattan furniture placed in an exposed outdoor zone — a poolside area, an open-air restaurant, a hotel terrace — will typically show visible degradation within one to two Indian monsoon seasons. PE rattan, when manufactured to a commercial specification, reliably serves 7 to 10 years in outdoor hospitality environments.
The critical word is “commercial specification.” Not all PE rattan furniture is built the same way. The quality gap between low-grade and contract-grade PE rattan furniture is significant, and it is not visible in photographs.
The 5 Technical Specifications Every B2B Buyer Must Confirm Before Ordering
1. Frame Material: Aluminium, Not Steel
A furniture frame that looks identical in photos can be made of either aluminium or mild steel. Steel frames are cheaper to fabricate but carry a significant rust risk, particularly in coastal deployments and high-humidity monsoon environments. Marine-grade aluminium frames do not rust. They are also lighter, which matters for outdoor furniture that staff needs to reposition for events and layouts. At our Delhi factory, we use marine-grade aluminium for all outdoor B2B furniture. We do not offer steel-frame outdoor furniture because it fails the commercial durability test within 18 months in Indian conditions.
2. Powder-Coating Process: Steps Matter
A single-coat powder finish provides basic protection. A 3-step process — pre-treatment, primer, and top-coat — provides the corrosion resistance required for outdoor HORECA use. Ask any manufacturer for their powder-coating specification before ordering. A vendor who cannot answer this question precisely is not manufacturing to a commercial standard.
3. UV Stabilization Grade in the Wicker
PE rattan fiber is available in multiple grades. The key differentiator for outdoor use is whether the PE compound contains UV stabilizers, and at what concentration. Without UV stabilizers, outdoor PE rattan fades to a chalky, dull finish within one to two Indian summers. UV-stabilized HDPE wicker retains colour and flexibility significantly longer. When sourcing PE rattan furniture for outdoor hospitality use, always request the fiber specification, not just the product description.
4. Cushion Fabric Specification
Cushions are the component most likely to fail before the frame or the weaving. In India’s outdoor hospitality environments — where furniture is used poolside, on open terraces, and in monsoon-exposed garden areas — the cushion fabric must be water-repellent and quick-drying. Foam must be commercial-density and resistant to compression under high daily guest traffic. We specify outdoor-grade water-repellent fabric for all cushions. Quick-dry foam means poolside cushions are guest-ready within 30 minutes of rain.
5. Load Testing for Commercial Use
Residential furniture and commercial-grade HORECA furniture are not the same standard. A hotel dining chair may support 500 or more uses per week. A residential chair at that rate would fail in months. Ask your manufacturer whether their products are load-tested to commercial weight capacity. At our factory, every product specification is designed around commercial hospitality use, not residential use.
Pan-India Supply: What Hotel Chains Need From a Single Manufacturer
Multi-property hotel chains procuring outdoor furniture face a specific challenge that single-property buyers do not: consistency across geographically dispersed properties in different climate zones. A furniture piece that looks identical in a Goa beachfront property and a Delhi rooftop restaurant must also perform identically in two very different climates.
Working with a single manufacturer for pan-India supply solves this. You get one specification, one quality standard, and one accountability point for warranty and replacement. At our Delhi factory, we have supplied outdoor furniture to properties across Goa, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and the Himalayan hill station belt under a single B2B agreement. The specification travels with the client across all their properties.
